The Turkey Bowl That Left a Mark

The Turkey Bowl That Left a Mark

Evan and I started dating in July 2023, and it didn’t take long for us to fall head over heels for each other. By Thanksgiving, we were inseparable, so I invited him to join my family for the annual Westover Thanksgiving dinner. It was the perfect opportunity for him to meet my extended family—but the day didn’t quite go as planned.

Earlier that morning, Evan played in a Turkey Bowl, a friendly touch football game that, as it turned out, wasn’t so “touch.” During one play, he and another guy both went for the ball and collided. The other guy’s mouth smacked into Evan’s forehead, and the result? A chipped tooth embedded in Evan’s forehead and a nasty gash.

Despite the injury, Evan refused to miss Thanksgiving. He went home, and his mom and dad patched him up with glue and butterfly bandages. No stitches, no ER visit—just a lot of determination and a slightly swollen forehead.

When he arrived at the dinner, his story quickly became the highlight of the evening. Everyone was impressed by his toughness and dedication (even if we all agreed he probably should’ve gotten stitches). He charmed my family with his humor and easygoing nature, gash and all.

Looking back, it’s one of those moments that perfectly sums up who Evan is—determined, resilient, and willing to go the extra mile for the people he cares about. Despite the unconventional circumstances, he made a lasting impression, and my family couldn’t help but admire his good-natured humor and commitment. It was the start of many great memories together.
