Colby's Cancer Journey: A Story of Strength and Resilience
In June of 2008, we noticed something concerning about Colby: his scrotum was getting big and hard. A visit to the doctor revealed a mass the size of a golf ball that needed immediate attention. The end of June marked a significant and terrifying milestone in our lives as Colby, just 21 months old at the time, underwent surgery to remove the large mass. The results of the surgery were devastating—the mass was a tumor, and it was cancerous. The diagnosis came just one day before the birth of Nellie, adding to the emotional turmoil.
The tumor was identified as a yolk sac tumor, a rare and malignant tumor of cells that line the yolk sac of the embryo. These cells normally become ovaries or testes; however, the cause of a yolk sac tumor is unknown. It is most often found in children before the ages of 1 to 2, but can occur throughout life. Colby had to undergo a series of tests, including a CT scan and numerous blood tests, to determine the stage of the cancer. The key marker the doctors were looking at was the level of Alfa fetoprotein (AFP) in his blood. For a healthy outcome, the AFP marker needed to be below 6 points.
The week after his surgery, Colby’s AFP (alpha feta protein) levels were alarmingly high at 836. However, there was hope. By mid-July, the AFP levels had dropped to 36, and by the beginning of August, they had further decreased to 12.5. With each test, we were edging closer to the crucial target of 6.
Thanks to the significant drop in his AFP levels, Colby was spared from undergoing chemotherapy. Nonetheless, the journey was far from over. He had to endure monthly blood tests and bi-monthly ultrasounds and X-rays for at least a year. These routine checks were vital in ensuring the cancer had not returned. Eventually, the frequency of these tests was reduced to every six months.
Colby showed remarkable resilience throughout this ordeal. Despite the frequent doctor visits and the discomfort of repeated tests, he adapted to his new routine. One bright spot in this challenging period was the Mountain States Tumor Institute (MSTI), one of the best pediatric cancer centers in Idaho. Colby actually enjoyed going to MSTI, where he could play and interact with the caring staff. Knowing he was in good hands provided immense comfort to our family.

After six long years of rigorous testing and monitoring, we received the news we had been praying for: Colby was considered cancer-free. To celebrate this monumental achievement, we threw a big party, rejoicing in the strength and resilience that Colby had shown throughout his journey.
Colby’s battle with cancer was a tough and emotional journey, but it was also a testament to his incredible strength and the support of our family and medical team. Through each step, from the terrifying diagnosis to the triumphant celebration of being cancer-free, Colby’s courage and determination shone brightly. Our gratitude to the Mountain States Tumor Institute and all the doctors and nurses who cared for him is boundless. Today, we look back with relief and forward with hope, cherishing every moment of Colby’s bright future.
