A Memorable Family Camping Trip to Yankee Fork

After three years of non-stop rodeos, my family and I finally had the chance to go camping at Yankee Fork with my family for Independence Day. The anticipation of this trip had us all buzzing with excitement. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable adventure:

Day 1, We arrived at Yankee Fork and immediately started setting up our camper. Just as we got everything in place, the sky decided to welcome us with a dramatic rain and thunderstorm. It was a cozy evening spent listening to the rain patter on the camper, an unexpected but oddly soothing start to our trip.

Day 2. The next day, we headed to Redfish Lake for a day filled with fun and relaxation. We had lunch, swam, paddled on the paddle board, and soaked up the sun. After our time at the lake, we indulged in some delicious ice cream at Patagonia in Stanley. It was the perfect treat to end a perfect day.

Our third day took an adventurous turn when we got a flat tire on the way to Bayhorse Lake. A sharp rock had punctured it, but we quickly changed to the spare and continued on our way. Bayhorse Lake was breathtaking, surrounded by majestic mountains and featuring two docks perfect for fishing.

We had our share of humorous moments too. Oscar got stuck in the mud while wading out into the lake, and Evan had to pull him out using the paddleboard. They soon figured out that fly fishing from the paddleboard was the best approach, taking turns since we only had one. Meanwhile, Nellie fished on the dock with Alyssa, Izzy, Ali, Troy, and Seth. There was a minor mishap when Oscar accidentally hooked Ali's arm, but thankfully, it was just a scratch.

While they fished, my mom, Jill, my dad, Katelyn, Nita, Westy, Scotland, Colby, and I relaxed in the picnic area, enjoying the stunning views. After our fishing adventures, we returned to camp for dinner and a fun card game called Schadoosh.

On the fourth day, the Fourth of July, we explored the historic town of Custer. We walked through old homes and learned how to pan for gold, immersing ourselves in the rich history of the area. Back at camp, we played more games and had a dinner of hot dogs, chili, and mac and cheese.

As night fell, Oscar lit up the evening with a packet that turned the fire into a mesmerizing display of blue, green, and purple flames. We also enjoyed no-mess streamer cannons and glow sticks, adding a vibrant touch to our celebration.

Our final day began with a fascinating tour of the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, which was both educational and physically demanding with all its stairs. We then visited Bonanza Cemetery and Boothill Cemetery, soaking in the historical atmosphere.

Afterwards, we returned to camp for naps, more fishing, and a final family dinner. It was a relaxing end to our action-packed trip.

Day six, On our last day, we packed up to drive home. However, our departure was not without a small adventure. We got stuck at the Stanley Gas Station and had to wiggle our way out before finally making our journey back home.

This camping trip to Yankee Fork was more than just a getaway; it was a chance for our family to reconnect and create lasting memories. From the unexpected rainstorm to the fishing adventures, historical explorations, and even the small mishaps, every moment was filled with joy, laughter, and togetherness. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures and the beauty of spending time with loved ones in the great outdoors.
